It all started with a prayer. A prayer to keep a horse and rider safe during the fast-paced, rodeo sport of barrel racing. Then, it turned into so much more.
An act of service.
Racing for Miracles was formed when one person's love for the rodeo sport of barrel racing turned into an act of service. For Executive Director Faith Gonzales, horses have been a part of her family for generations. It was no surprise that she herself would love horses and spend her life competing.
One day while at a barrel race, the announcer called her name and told her to start thinking about her run. This normally means that she will be the third person in the group to run down the alleyway. She closed her eyes and recited her normal pre-run prayer: "I don't care about knocked barrels or speed, please just let me and my horse come out of the arena safe."
It was in that moment that everything stopped. It was like God himself had put his hand on her shoulder and said, "I can do that, but you must give back."
Thinking of the message she had received that day, she went home and started to plan, and Racing for Miracles was formed.
The nonprofit organization hosts benefit barrel races where the proceeds are donated to special causes.
The past three races have chosen to donate to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville. Faith chose this hospital for a number of reasons, but mostly because of their determination to treat every patient that comes in their doors regardless of the family's ability to pay. The organization has donated more than $5,000 to the facility.
Racing for Miracles is also known to host ride nights to help when natural disasters occur. The organization donated supplies and monetary aid after Hurricane Harvey as well as to local community members when a tornado destroyed several homes.
The nonprofit organization strives to use their passion for horses and barrel racing and use it serve others.
We believe we can do what we love and change the world at the same time.
